Looking for a romantic getaway? Make your way to Salmon Run, a luxurious vacation home that features great amenities, a spacious kitchen, and breathtaking views of Noyo Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. You won’t have to swim upstream to enjoy your vacation at this fully renovated historic treasure.
During the height of the salmon industry, the building that is now the Salmon Run operated as a cannery, and fishermen would gather here to trade their fresh fish for an equal weight of already-canned salmon. At the time, salmon were plentiful, even near the river mouth, so fishermen didn’t have to go far to find their supper, and this bustling trade fed local families and visitors alike. Although the cannery is long-gone, the Salmon Run pays homage to the long heritage of salmon catching in the harbor.
Located next to a working pier offering a front-row seat to local fishing boats offloading their bountiful, fresh catch, the Salmon Run features a two-story setup with a downstairs kitchen, an upstairs bedroom, and the best of both worlds: a convenient location that provides a refuge from the hustle and bustle of ordinary life. You’ll enjoy privacy when you’re home, but when you’re ready to go out, you’ll relish the close proximity of world-class restaurants serving the freshest seafood you could dream of. (If you’re not a seafood fan, you’ll have your choice of award-winning dishes from top chefs working with the best local ingredients.)
For those who have more culinary know-how, the fully equipped kitchen will call your name. The layout will give you ample room to create your masterpieces, and the four-top stove is at your service. Dazzle and delight for a quiet night in with a delicious home-cooked meal, or fuel your adventures with fresh meals and snacks you’ve prepped for the road.
For outdoor excursions, you have your pick of the numerous trails and activities along the coast. You’ll want to set aside some time to explore a multitude of wonders, from pristine beaches to towering redwoods to secluded waterfalls. Every state park offers its own charm, from Russian Gulch to Jug Handle to MacKerricher. If you prefer smooth sailing, check out one of the paved trails, such as the North and South Coastal Trails or Pomo Park -- or set your course north to MacKerricher’s famous boardwalk, where you’ll spot seals, sea lions, and tide pools. Beach days await at Pudding Creek or Big River. Or take the Skunk Train for a trip back in time -- and to the heart of the redwoods. The possibilities are endless!
Need gifts for friends or family -- or yourself? Head to downtown Fort Bragg and explore everything the town has to offer. Within a couple of blocks, you can browse quirky and joyful socks, peruse used and new books, visit galleries featuring talented local artists, or find your new favorite fashion. In the Depot Mall, you’ll find everything from jewelry to shoes to baby clothes, as well as the delightful desserts of Laurel’s Deli. Come for the cookies, stay for the trains and history. Of course, we won’t tell if you end up taking an impromptu dessert tour instead…
Post-excursion, kick back and avail yourself of the flatscreen TV or watch the sky come alive with color as the sun sets over the harbor. In the evenings, you can rest easy, knowing your journey is complete for the day. Snuggle into the comfy king bed and sleep well. Whatever plans you hatch at the Salmon Run, you’ll feel refreshed and energized as you set out on your next trek!
About the history of salmon in Noyo Harbor – from the locals who lived it
Commercial salmon fishing began in the Noyo Harbor in about 1916. The fish were sold whole & uncleaned for cat food only. Human consumption of salmon started years later.
Founded in the late 1940s, Sportsman’s RV Park was the first sport center for salmon fishing in the harbor. Founded by Ray Welsh and 3 others, it was open from June through September and very lively and active throughout, packed with all forms of current-model tiny RVs and pickups. 16’ and 18’ fishing boats were made on site and could be rented along with a 6hp motor.
At the time, there was no need to go far out to sea to catch salmon -- they were abundant near the river mouth. Fishermen would bring the fresh salmon back to the building called the “Cannery” (now the Salmon Run), where they would trade the fresh fish for canned salmon.
There were also a smoke house and other related building facilities on site to go along with the fishing and camping. Fresh water was obtained from a secret tap into the city water that the city knew about but could not find. Through the years, the piers and docks grew with the fishing trade, and they were always packed with boats.
Note on the bathroom - There is one bathroom in the house which is upstairs in the master bedroom. That means that anyone staying in the house that needs to use the bathroom will have to get there by going through the master bedroom. Mendocino has some very unusual designs and this is a great example of that .
