Come relax with your group (for 1 - 24: optimal # couples is 4) in our secluded, comfortable, cozy, and exceptionally clean 3200 sq. ft. Lodge near Lynchburg and Appomattox, Virginia, with the only vacation access to the James River in Appomattox County (between Lynchburg and James River State Park). There are 4 full bathrooms with plenty of fluffy, white towels, paper products, and bathroom supplies, a uniquely well-equipped kitchen (you will be shocked at how much you'll find there), and a large meeting/livingroom. You'll be able to spread out in the den/library, recreation room, and sunroom. We have plenty of outdoor furniture for relaxing in while listening to the soothing sounds of the woods, or for eating your dinner outside. If your group is larger, you are welcome to set up tents and camp around the Lodge. Campers are welcome, not only at the Lodge, but at our gorgeous riverfront picnic area and canoe access. We provide unlimited local and long-distance phone service, satellite TV (DirecTv) in the Lodge at no extra charge, and wireless high speed internet access for a slight fee.

We are located in historic Appomattox County, where the Civil War ended and which is the location for the wonderful Appomattox County National Historical Park, complete with living history re-enactors, and the Museum of the Confederacy with its year-round abundance of activities for all ages. Enjoy country cooking in the Town of Appomattox, and live music, great coffee and treats at Baines' Bookstore.

There's a growing number of wine, brewery, or history tours easily done by renting a limousine or driving yourself. Two of Thomas Jefferson's homes are nearby, as well as many other great places to explore, and restaurants to try. Love fishing? We have outstanding small-mouth bass fishing, blue gill, carp, and catfish, and are seeing a welcome resurgence of shad. Like to hike? We have more than 7 miles of trails all over our 275 acres just for you. We've seeded the trails with picnic tables so you can stop and have a picnic or make some sketches of the abundant wildflowers. Kids love to come brush our horses or fish in our little pond. Find some arrowheads while you're watching them or take them up the hill to the old manganite mine.

You can rest while you're here, but you won't be bored. Raining or snowing?--That's ok, we have tons of stuff inside to entertain you and your kids with: ping pong, fuse ball, puzzles, games, LOTS of books, and recent magazines, as well as cook books, cooking magazines, and outdoors magazines for the fishermen and hunters.

Activities and Special Interests

Rockcliffe Farm Retreat & Lodge is located in historic Appomattox County, Virginia - "Where Our Nation Reunited", and is a good base from which to explore the many attractions of Central Virginia. On your way here, you may want to follow the signs for "Lee's Retreat". During your stay, you can visit the Appomattox County National Historical Park, the scene of the signing of the terms of General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant, as well as the old train station in downtown Appomattox, where Lee's supplies were captured by Grant. The restored Cloverhill Village is nearby.

Downtown Appomattox offers an historic courthouse and a number of delightful shops, including a bookstore (with music in the evenings), The Appomattox Gallery, places to eat, and three grocery stores.

Thomas Jefferson's summer home, Poplar Forest, is only a 30-minute drive away from Rockcliffe Farm Retreat, and Monticello, his home in Charlottesville, Virginia is only a 90-minute drive. The Retreat is also near Wintergreen Ski Resort, Holliday Lake State Park, and Smith Mountain Lake.

Here are some great activities that are in our area:

1. Go into Appomattox, 12 miles and 20 minutes away:

Get some great books, music, coffee, quiche, and desserts at Baines Books

Get a gourmet luncheon or dinner at The Babcock House

Have tea at the Appomattox Tea Room next to the Appomattox Gallery, call 352-9590 for reservations.

Tour the Appomattox Gallery. The new owners have a strict policy on the correct and accurate labeling of antiques, which you'll appreciate

Visit our excellent Visitor Center and Gift Shop (across from Baines' Books)

Take in a play at the Appomattox Courthouse Theatre, if you're here on a weekend when there's a performance

Enjoy Railroad Festival in October

Come for Civil War reenactments

Visit Spring Creek Wine Cellar
2. Visit the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park
This is where the surrender between Generals Lee and Grant took place, ending the Civil War, and is well worth a visit. Especially fascinating for 10-year old boys of all ages.

3. Visit Cloverhill Village
Like a mini-Williamsburg, complete with period costumes

4. Morning Glory Miniature Horse Farm
11 minutes away, open by appointment (Carrie Whitby, owner, also offers riding lessons on our horses by prearrangement, $45/hour)

5. Fishwood Alpaca Farm and gift store
Great yarn! 6 minutes away, open by appointment

6. James River State Park
About 40 minutes northwest of us, down James River Road. An all day canoe trip from our river frontage. Go hiking, horseback riding, fishing (no swimming). Picnic.

7. Driving tours:

Lee's Retreat (between Petersburg and Appomattox)
The Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail
8. Wolf Creek Tack and Feed Store
(Hunting and Fishing Licenses and Supplies)

Our guests report sleeping a lot, eating and talking a lot, reading and playing a lot of pingpong, and most do at least a little hiking. None have reported being bored yet. Many of our guests enjoy cooking on our propane grill outside.

Our favorite activity, weather and water level permitting, is hanging out at our river frontage: fishing, swimming, eating, and sitting in "Jacuzzi Falls". It is 2 miles from the lodge door to our picnic area at the river. You need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to drive the unpaved, gravel and dirt road. It is steep in some sections, and crosses our stream at one point.

We moved here from the suburbs and love the drive to the river. We think it's a very pretty, interesting, and unique drive or hike. You'll definitely feel you've gotten "away from it all"!

No 4-wheel drive vehicle? No problem: we'll take you, just ask us when you register.

Other than that, you may:

Spend all day reading in the hammock

Sunbathe on the deck (seasonal...)

Hike down to the stream below the lodge, or go hiking around the property (maps provided)

Paint some landscapes or horse portraits

Write poetry

Take photos of wildflowers (May's the best for these), or the river, the woods, your friends, the horses, and our very photogenic geese, ducks, and guinea hens

Collect pretty feathers to take home which our guineas and geese have shed

Do some gourmet cooking using fresh herbs growing at the lodge and at our farm

Challenge Hugh to a bread baking contest

Have s'mores under the stars in one of the two fire pits

Play horseshoes, shoot baskets, do soccer drills in the field

Have ping pong, dart, and fuse ball tournaments

Go swimming or fishing in the James River, or just sit and watch the herons and bald eagles that live there

Go swimming, fishing, or practice paddling a canoe in our farm pond, or just sit by the pond and watch the geese, ducks and guinea hens doing their daily activities (eating, playing, chasing each other)

Take a picnic down to our picnic/campsite at the river, or to one of our many picnic tables in the woods and along our streams (there's one just below the lodge

Look for arrowheads and Stone Age tools on our property (we can suggest the best sites)

Come over to the farm side and brush horses (give us a call and we'll get the brushes out, maybe even help you)

Find out our current feeding times and you can help us feed the horses and put "the birds" to bed in the evening

Jam with your musician buddies on our elevated deck, overlooking the woods and Blue Ridge Mountains, or down at the James River

Get ready for your upcoming half-marathon on our hilly trails, or your marathon on the gorgeous Appomattox County roads

Bring your Honey to the Lodge for a romantic weekend, and have your meals all catered (see list of local caterers on Links page). Bring romantic movies to watch, play ping pong and let them win. Wade in the stream below the Lodge. Cuddle together on the hammock and listen to the birds and breeze

Ride your touring bicycles around the beautiful country roads in our area

Take a short (1.5 hour); or long (6 hour) canoe float to our river frontage(leave from Joshua Falls outside of Lynchburg) or from our river frontage (3-5 hours to Bent Creek, 15 to James River State Park). (Portage fee is $35 each way)

Go swimming, fishing, canoeing off our river frontage (once again, our favorite)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the Retreat
(Additional fees and/or advance notice may be needed)

We'd be happy to take you on a driving tour of the entire property so you can see it all if on a short visit, or get you acclimated for a longer stay.

Take a guided nature hike with Hugh in the morning, or Joan in the afternoon (Fee based on size of group and requested length of hike)

Go fishing with Hugh, Gear available, fishing license required.

Have a canoe lesson with Joan

Have Joan take you on a tour of very nearby points of interest (or go on your own):
A miniature horse farm (Morning Glory Minatures)
An alpaca farm (Fishwood Alpacas - they will do crafts with you and have a small gift shop)
A Master Gardener's vegetable garden
A nursery with woodland trails (Village Nursery - an especially good selection of herbs, and many excellent annual and perennial plants, etc., and decorations)
A nearby Christmas tree farm (December - cut your own tree and get seasonal handmade decorations)

Rent canoes ($42/per stay for lodge guests, includes paddles and life jackets, otherwise: $40/day)

Have a massage (we have an arrangement with It's a Matter of Touch)

Other Property Amenities

The roots of Rockcliffe Farm Retreat are in the mountains and deserts of San Diego, California, and in an old farmhouse in Winnetka, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The owners, (Mr. and Mrs.) Hugh Radcliffe and Joan Rockwell, grew up living outside as much as possible. As kids, we had similar interests, though thousands of miles apart. Hugh, in the idyllic southern Cal climate, mostly enjoyed doing everything outside, camping, hiking, and hunting whenever he wasn't in school, and fishing in the Pacific Ocean in a rowboat he still has. That area (Spring Valley), is now totally built up and paved over. Joan played in a wetlands which is now the site of a multimillion dollar mcmansion, read books while sitting in trees, and did as much boating as possible both as a kid and an adult. We both moved several times and always watched as trees, fields, farms, and views gave way to sprawl and/or congestion, and concrete. We met in 1994, when we found ourselves both in Appomattox, Virginia. Joan had acquired 100 acres on the James River which she hoped to make available to inner city children for hiking and enjoying nature, and to artists who might be inspired by the beautiful setting. Hugh loved the idea of this. How to achieve it, though? After we got married, we built a house on the 100 acres, and were unexpectedly and gradually able to purchase adjacent properties, thinking thereby to keep even more forest undeveloped. In 2003, property came up for auction on our road which had a family house on it and was adjacent to our property, though 1/2 mile down the road. This house had a kitchen large enough for a group, we thought. Other bidders stood back on auction day, and we were able to purchase the house. We applied for a conditional use permit, then spent one and a half years remodeling the house so that it could accommodate guests who would enjoy the "retreat" we hoped to achieve. The Lodge at Rockcliffe Farm Retreat officially opened for guests in May 2006. We have had an amazing assortment of wonderful guests and hope that you will soon come for a visit, too. "Come relax with us!" Your group can visit for the day, overnight, or for an extended stay in our comfy 3 bedroom (+ sleep-in Den) Lodge. There are 4 full bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and a large meeting/livingroom. You can also enjoy the den/library, recreation room, and sunroom. We provide unlimited local and long-distance phone service, satellite TV (Directv), and wireless high speed internet access, at no extra charge. The Lodge is ideal for: Friends vacationing together Family reunions Church and business retreats School groups Rustic weddings up to 150 Honeymooners Artists: Painters, photographers, writers, musicians Outdoor/nature enthusiasts Someone just needing some quiet and time alone.
